Chile Country : Chilean authorities reported that at least 76 people were killed in the 8.8 degree earthquake that also caused significant damage in the South American country early on Saturday.

“There are 76 confirmed dead,” Deputy Interior Minister said Patricio Rosende. “We have had a major incident such as the one not seen for years.”

The extent of the damage across the country and became more pronounced after several hours of the quake occurred at 3.34 am (1204 GMT) some 90 km north-east of ConcepciĆ³n, and it was feared the death toll higher than that would go after.

After the first quake, the country was then rocked by several aftershocks.

Earlier, President Michelle Bachelet went to the center of national emergency to assist in planning for the relief effort. Officials appealed to people to stay in their homes.

Local media reported that the apartment buildings in Santiago, located about 320 km north of the epicenter.

Among the reports of damage, telephone and power lines were brought down in some areas, and Santiago at the international airport was damaged and is closed until further notice.

Television pictures showed at the airport passenger bridge collapsed and roofing material scattered.

Sections of the new highway bridge in Santiago, also collapsed, while the communication route between the capital and the most seriously affected areas in the southern part of thecountry and cut off. The country’s mobile phone network has also been disrupted.

In the Warning Center Pacific Tsunami warning for Chile and Peru, and less urgent tsunami to see Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, and Antarctica.
