BEACON: Howland Public Library will offer AARP Tax-Aid, the free, volunteer-run tax preparation service for middle- and low-income taxpayers, with special attention to those age 60 and older. The sessions will be on Mondays and Thursdays through April 15. Appointments are required and may be made for 10 and 11 a.m., noon and 1 p.m. Dial 211 to schedule an appointment. Bring your last income tax return, copies of all income statements, Social Security cards for all people listed on tax return and a picture ID. The library is at 313 Main St.

American Legion Post to honor 4 chaplains

The Arlington American Legion will hold a memorial service at 2 p.m. Saturday at the post on Overocker Road in Poughkeepsie honoring four chaplains who died during the German attack on the USAT Dorchester in February 1943. The chaplains gave their life jackets to four soldiers while the ship was sinking. Call 845-471-4641 or 845-452-5308.
Hyde Park appoints 2 police assistants

HYDE PARK: The town has hired two new police assistants. The Hyde Park town board last week voted unanimously to appoint Derrick Byrne to full-time police assistant — filling a vacancy. Byrne will be paid an hourly rate of $14.57 as established by the town’s collective bargaining agreement with Civil Service Employees Association Town Hall Unit. The appointment is effective Feb. 9. The board at its recent town hall meeting also voted unanimously to appoint Renee Fuentes to part-time police assistant. She will be paid an hourly rate of $14.57 as established by the CSEA salary agreement.
Local mastodons are lecture topic

CORNWALL: The Hudson Highlands Nature Museum will present “Mastodons and Museums: A Legacy for Orange County” as part of its Evening Speaker Series at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Cornwall Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall, 222 Hudson St. Discussion will center on the history of the mastodon in Orange.
