Basant Panchmi is the significance of arrival of Basant (Spring) after winter season.

Saraswati Puja is observed on the fifth day after no moon night in the Hindu month of Magh. It is believed that Goddess Saraswati was born on this day. Saraswati has been identified with the Vedic Saraswati River. She is considered consort of Brahma. The Goddess Saraswati is depicted as a beautiful, light-skinned woman dressed in pure white seated on a lotus. The four arms of Goddess Sarawati represents the four aspects of human personality in learning: mind, intellect, alertness, and ego.

The day of Saraswati Puja or Basant Panchmi is considered as one of the most auspicious day in a year. Education institutions organise Saraswati puja on this day. On the day of Vasant Panchami, many children are taught to write their first words in pre-primary schools in India. Students keep their notebooks, pens and educational items near the statue of Goddess Saraswati and distribute sweets among the devotees.
