Cindy Morgan

Cindy Morgan

Former state Rep. Richard Morgan says Sen. Harris Blake, the vote on the $ 25 million fishing pier may be a turning point in his decision to run against the one-time ally and close friend.

Morgan filed Thursday against Blake on May 4 Republican Party primary. His wife, Cindy Morgan County Commissioner, and lost to Blake two years ago in the primaries.

“There is much to admire about Harris,” Morgan said in a statement. “It’s fair, there was not a hint of scandal, but I do not see how they can vote to build $ 25 millionfishing pier in Nags Head is going to help in the evaluation of our economy, which seems very important for me.

“My leadership in the formulation and writing bills to budget, and make sounds like that, especially in these tough economic times, what we need now, and these sounds for $ 25 millionfishing pier, and this is exactly the anti-me, and it should be completely anti-Harris. ”

Blake, of Pinehurst, is seeking re-election to a fifth term. He laughed when asked Friday about the Morgan to comment on the pier fishing. Blake said he had to check that to see if he had voted for the project, who said he was believed to be part of the 2009 budget.

“I can not easily defend,” he said. “There was a lot of discussion about that.”

Morgan pointed out that the draft law on self-contained.

Blake said he was not surprised that Morgan had been made to oppose him.

“We played against him last time, although it was Cindy,” he said. “I prefer not to be. I am not surprised. I wish him luck, but I plan to win.”

Cindy Morgan’s decision to run two years ago was a public affirmation of many political insiders what was known for years: one-time close political allies, and has become the enemy. There were signs of erosion of the relationship shortly after Morgan deal with the Democrats o language has become a common home in 2003.

Man does not say what caused the fall.

“They must be the reason to say that it is important to run against me,” said Blake. “We were once close, and this is the tragedy of it. I can not change this relationship.”

Morgan says he simply believed that it could be more effective representation for Moore County, although some of the baggage of the past – in particular, that he fell from grace with his state after rising to become the most powerful Republican in state government. Was accused of betraying the party by making a deal to share power with the Democrats. Thrown away from theRepublican Party in the Executive Committee of the State.

State party leaders openly campaigned for his main rival, Joe Boylan, in 2006. Boylan defeated Morgan in the race and brutal and I went to win a couple of candidates not belonging in the general election. Boylan serve only one term, shot down by alcohol-related accident and conviction of driving while impaired. Republican Jimmy logs and won the seat by acclamation for re-election to a second term.

Morgan re-emerged on the political arena after two years of loss of Boylan. After winning the Republican nomination over two other candidates for state superintendent of public education, because he lost the June Atkinson in the general election.

“This was a sort of exoneration for me,” said Morgan. “We have won 97 of the 100 districts, including the Moore County (in the primary).”

He supported his wife’s decision to run against Blake two years ago.

“I am satisfied with the willingness to step up to the plate,” he said. “I felt it had a better chance this time, but decided she wants to work for re-election as County Commissioner.

“I had no interest in returning to the home, where you have the language and the language the interim, though, people did not discuss with me. The Senate was always considered, and I did not rule out other offices, and I did well in the primaries (the headmaster of a government school) , but this is where you fell. ”

‘It’s in my blood’

Morgan said he hoped that the State party would stay out of the contest with his first Blake. The party said in participation in 2006 was “unprecedented”.

“The race for the U.S. Senate and Congress and a lot of races for state House and Senate, and resources but is there shooting at each other,” he said.

Morgan added that if elected, he would not “make a career of it, and being there forever, and when I’m running 80 and if I have health problems.”

Morgan stopped short of saying he believed Blake did not physically fit for service.

“All I can say is that I will not do it,” he added. “We should have a concern, what is he made the contribution? What kind of casting votes is that?”

Blake said he would not run if he did not believe he was up to the task.

Morgan said he would not discuss campaign strategy in terms of what can be done in a different way from his wife in the election campaigntwo years ago.

“I’m very deliberative,” he said. “If I did not think I could give a reasonable opportunity to take him out, I would not do this, and I’m excited about a campaign. It’s in my blood. I’ve done a lot of things to Moore County, and I think I can continue to make contributions. I think I can be a member of the Senate was more effective for Moore County.

“Times are really tough, but it will be fun. The real point I want to make is that these difficult financial times call for legislators who can do something to get through. These are times of unprecedented. I hope that voters will know that I can contribute to contribution, and this is the main driver for me. ”

Morgan added that Blake is a challenge to participate in a series of discussions.

“I call to Harris,” said Morgan. “Let’s discuss the issues. Let’s find out where Harris stands, such as the vote on the pavement. The voters need to know.”

Blake ‘not worried’

Blake said he planned to continue to focus on the issues, voters indicated that it could be effective, especially if he can win the Republican majority in the Senate.

“For the first time, we have a good chance to take the Senate,” he said. “The Senate has changed in the past 10 years. I like to move from seat number 47″.

“Said Blake, the Republicans proposed legislation to reform the budget process. There was a need for more effort to reduce the cost of medical care.

“We are committed to making sure these things are heard,” he said. “We have to get something done, and we have to look at how to do it in the budget. There must be some limitations on what can be spent. Publish very short of money now that is scary. We have to get a handle on it.”

As this campaign, and Blake said he planned to stick to issues.

“I’m not worried about what to do,” said Blake Morgan. “I’m not going to spend some time responding to him, and we will do what he does. I know why I do this and I’m still there, and I’m glad he said that he thinks I am sincere.”
